How to Connect Your Xbox 360 to BT Fon Wireless Network

Hi Peeps,

My name is Neil, want to know how to to connect your xbox 360 to BT FON  wireless network ?  Before I start telling you how to do it let me tell you about how I came across of doing it. Well I good 6 months ago I moved in to a new flat, when I first moved in the first thing I did was look for a unsecured network to play my xbox 360 at the time money was tight and could not really afford to pay out £30 every month just to get internet in my area. That's when I came across and seen I had a BT FON and BT Openzone network in my area at first I never had a clue what network is was so I logged on to it and seen I had to pay to use it at the I thought ok I will pay a 1 day because I was so despite to get on the net.

So I paid for it then got offered a wireless modem for £30 and it said free internet for life in the UK that's when my eyes opened up I thought thats great. Until I seen a catch like most other broadband company's, its said I had to already have a internet connection to register the BT FON modem. So now I was thinking what to do to get this internet connection to my flat, so then I knew what I was going to do, I bought the modem took it my mothers and used her broadband to register the device. Hey pesto I got givng a user name and password to use any BT FON or any BT Openzone network in the UK I was over the moon knowing that I now have free internet at my flat for has long as I wanted.

So here came the part where I finally could browse the net and check emails and stuff like that BUT I could not use my xbox 360. I couldn't understand why, I tired everything to connected to my Xbox live account I entered my wireless network manually checked IP address and gateway address I did everything I even google about a million times but no one had a answer how to connect my xbox 360 to my BT FON wireless network. So I gave up and didn't play xbox for a few months, Then one I was bored and thought OK I will try again and try to connect my xbox live.

So tried doing it manually and nothing again I then even tired to bridge my connection but even that didn't work. I really did think I was not going to play my xbox 360 again lol thought about selling but at the end I connected my xbox live account yay ! so that was the reason why I didn't sell it. And now that brings me to tell you people how to do it.

first thing is first things you need, a xbox 360, a Laptop / PC desktop and a ethernet cable

Step 1 ) Turn on your xbox 360

Step 2 ) Plug in your ethernet cable into the xbox 360 then connected it to your laptop / PC Desktop.

Step 3 ) Try and connect your xbox live account it should say failed so don't worry.

Step 4 ) Now go to your laptop / PC Desktop make sure your wireless internet is connected before you do the next steps right you should be now connected to your internet.

Step 5) Press start > then go to Control Panel > Click on Network and Internet > now click on Network and Sharing Center > now you should see a full map of your network. Below you should see view your active networks to the right I want you to to click on wireless network connection.

Step 6 ) Now you should see a little window where it tells you about connection speed etc, at the bottom of the window you should see ( Properties ) click on that and now you should see two tabs at the top saying networking and Sharing click on sharing.

Step 7 ) You should see 2 boxes one with a tick and one with no tick click on the one with no tick. now go back to your xbox 360 and try to connect. If you lucky then you might connected first time but if you dont then dont worry stay on the xbox live screen where is says test xbox live connection. Now go back your laptop untick to two boxes in the sharing tab window, then tick them both again but start from the bottom to tick first called allow other network users to control or disable blah blah.

Step 8 ) Ok now to back to the xbox 360 your should be on the test xbox live screen on your tv now test the connection. Your xbox 360 should now be connected :)

Thank you for reading this and I hope it helps you, sorry I went on a bit but I thought I would write a interesting story has well lol thanks any problems then drop me your email below in the comments box.

  4. Hi, there doesn't seem to be a a share tab on the BT FON connection when i load up properties. I'm on windows 7, Asus vx6. Xbox 360 is visible on the network map and is making the connection to the netbook without problem. Just stalls when it tries to access the internet.

    Cheers C.A

    2. I have worked out why its not working for everyone I have Windows 7 Ultimate. It works because Ultimate comes with all the network settings so if you have Windows basic or home etc it won't work.

  7. If you download a piece of software called virtual router run it, manually add the name and password on the Xbox you won't need any cables and it doesn't cost a penny.

  8. I don't know why you don't just bridge the wireless connection and your Xbox tethered connection together... Much more simple.
